Sarlat, the beautiful awakened

77 protected monuments

This jewel, nestled between Vézère and Dordogne, has become the symbol of the Périgord art de vivre. The profusion of its heritage, rich in houses more elegant than the others, testifies to the richness of its nobility from the fifteenth century onwards.

La Roque Saint-Christophe

On the road between Montignac and Les Eyziès, a site is emblematic: La Roque Saint Christophe, a one kilometre long cliff suspended above the Vézère and dug shelters. Occupied by prehistoric man, its natural cavities were then arranged, carved in the Middle Ages, serving notably as a refuge for the Huguenots, before being dismantled in the sixteenth century. Today it is the largest troglodytic complex in Europe.

The Cave of Tourtoirac

The geological pearl of the Périgord

Discovered in 1995, the Tourtoirac Cave amazes its inventor, then its speleologist friends. Over time, water and nature dug the cavity and decorated and designed it into a huge fresco.
Following the underground river, you will be immersed in a spectacle of shadows and lights between columns and draperies, eccentric and fistulous.
This unforgettable trip to Tourtoirac will lead you to the discovery of this village marked first by prehistory, then the history of a thousand-year-old abbey.

The Cave of Lascaux

The Centre International de l’Art Pariétal reproduces the original Lascaux Cave in its entirety. The visit of Lascaux 4 allows to discover prehistory and parietal art in the Dordogne in the cradle of Cro-Magnon, the Vézère Valley.

A tune of Game of Thrones

Castelnaud, Beynac, Hautefort, Commarque, the Black Perigord has hundreds of castles. It is said that the Dordogne is home to 1001 castles, manors and manors (that is to say many princesses to be delivered…). But why? Because in the Middle Ages, during the Hundred Years’ War, the Dordogne was a zone of major conflicts between France and England. Then, to protect themselves, fortified castles grew like mushrooms.
